For the past nine months, the New York Giants have talked about playing defense like the Giants of old. The style was simple, brute force. No one outmuscled the Giants. No one ran on them. New defensive coordinator Perry Fewell and his unit will see how far they have come on Sunday when the Carolina Panthers open the season against the Giants in the $1.6 billion New Meadowlands Stadium.

Resting on the top shelf of Jake Delhomme's locker are a ratty set of shoulder pads, hand-me-downs from New Orleans teammate Billy Joe Tolliver. Delhomme brought the well-worn equipment with him to Cleveland after seven seasons in Carolina. He wears them during training camp because they're much lighter than new ones, and any break from the summer's heat helps.

Three story lines Opening day line-up. Expected to dominate up front, the Giants defensive line underachieved badly in 2009, done in by a mixture of injuries, sub-par performances and a lack of a sense of urgency. The club retooled, taking DE Jason Pierre-Paul and DT Linval Joseph with the first two draft picks to add to a talented group that is still smarting from last year's humbling. Hold the Peppers. There was great concern how the Panthers would be able to pressure the opposing quarterback now that Julius Peppers is gone but in the preseason they...

With new starters at seven positions this year, not much has been expected of Carolina's defense this year.

But in preseason games against the Ravens, Jets and Titans, the Panthers have been lights out.

They rank first in overall defense—and it's not even close—and second in fewest points allowed. They also have a league-high 18 sacks, despite losing Julius Peppers to free agency and parting ways with long-time starters like Damione Lewis, Nail Diggs, Chris Harris and Maake Kemoeatu this offseason.

Preseason or not, the fact that Carolina's defense is allowing just 174 yards and 10 points per game is impressive.

It's been the one highlight for the Panthers in a preseason marred by inconsistent special teams play and a flailing passing game led by...

Atlanta Falcons The starting secondary will play together for the first time in Sunday's opener at Pittsburgh. CB Dunta Robinson didn't play in the preseason because of a tight hamstring. He did practice the last two weeks, but the coaches didn't want to expose him to injury in a meaningless exhibition game. During the offseason minicamp and spring practices, he lined up on the left side. He will play the right corner against Pittsburgh.

There are so many reasons Andre Neblett shouldn't be on an NFL roster. Poor grades in high school left him lightly recruited. While he eventually thrived there and helped turn around the Owls' moribund program, he went undrafted because of...
